Home > Real Beer & Ale Gift Packs Beer and ale are generic terms for an alcoholic beverage made from grains, strictly speaking ale is beer made without hops. The Sumerians 5000 years ago in the Middle East brewed and recorded the making of beer. Later the ancient Egyptians flavoured beer with herbs and spices. Later still with the onset of arable farming the cultivation of grains became established, and brewing of beer spread to Europe. It proved popular with tribes in the North and West and beer became engrained in the culture. The Norse Viking mythology had warriors who died in battle going to Valhalla drinking as much beer or ale as was wanted.
