SHERRY , PORT, MADEIRA & FORTIFIED WINES
Sherry, Port and Madeira are all fortified wines, A fortified wine is a wine with added brandy. The original reason for fortification was to preserve wines, as the higher alcohol level and additional sweetness help to preserve the wine. Fortified wines include, Sherry, Port, Marsala, Madeira, Vermouth, Muscat, and Sangria. Fortified wines are distinguished from spirits made from wine. Fortified wines have spirits added to them. While Spirits are distilations. Fortified wines called dessert wines in the U.S. Sherry is a Spanish wine from Jerez, Port is from Portugal and usually shipped from Oporto. Madeira is a wonderful wine from the beautiful Madeira Islands. Marsela is from Sicily. Vermouth wines are from both France or Italy while Muscat wine is from a specific pennisula in Portugal.
