Bollinger La Grand Annee 1999

Bollinger is characterised by its richness and structure, and the 1999 vintage does not disappoint. Ripe pears, a touch of toffee on the nose, held together by a structured palate. Surprisingly approachable now but will develop further complexities with extended ageing. Grande Annee, the name, signifies that Bollinger's vintage champagne only released during 'great' years. The Grande Annee blend comes only from a particularly fine harvest. When such a harvest occurs the House selects its best wines, cru by cru and grape variety by grape variety - the key to the particular year. Each wine is individually fermented in oak casks prior to blending. On average, the blend is composed of 65% pinot noir and 35% chardonnay. The house of Bollinger only produce vintage Champagnes in exceptional years, when the grapes have reached a perfect quality and maturity with a perfect balance between the acids and sugars. Hence the denomination Grand Annee given to Champagne that is only produced from the grapes of that special harvest. The Bollinger Grande Annee is a blended wine from crus and grape varieties and it carries the expression of the House style however, the style is also dependant on the characteristics of the given vintage. It is the best wine Bollinger can produce in an individual year by exposing its particular character. The grape supply comes from only the Grands Crus and Premier Crus vineyards of Champagne. The blend of Grande Annee 1999 is made from 70% Pinot Noir grape and 30% Chardonnay grape. The first fermentation was carried out in small oak casks lot by lot, cru by cru, grape variety by grape variety. Bollinger only use old casks to ensure that neither tannin nor oak flavours are imparted to the wines. Bollinger only produces vintage Champagne in exceptional years and the Bollinger House certainly took advantage of the outstanding 1999 vintage. With aromas of baked bread and honeyed and citrus flavours on the palate, the 1999 Grande Annee is very firmly structured with a beautifully long nutty aftertaste. For those who enjoy the complex character of mature Champagne, this could be cellared for another five or even ten years.
