Chateau Branaire 1999 Grand Cru & The Chateau Preuillac Medo

Chateau Branaire 1999 Grand Cru Classe 1855 Bordeaux. Chateau Branaire-Ducru is a splendid wine of power, elegance and subtlety. The wine has a fruit-forward style but has a structure and power requiring at least a decade of aging before showing its true nature. Chateau Branaire-Ducru produced using strictly with traditional methods in modernised 20th century facilities however gravity is still used to move the wine rather than by mechanical means. The young wines are aged in oak barrels for 20 months. Later during the aging period, wines are racked again by gravity into clean barrels, To end the barrel aging; wines are racked again while being fined in traditional manner with egg whites. Finally, all the wines are bottled on the property. Chateau Branaire-Ducru is seated in the commune of Saint Julian. Branaire-Ducru is surrounded with established neighbours of renown including Chateau Beychevelle, Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou and Chateau Gruaud-Larose. Chateau Branaire-Ducru was rated as a Fourth Growth in the Classification of 1855. A most excellent wine and one that can be laid down with effect. The Chateau Preuillac Medoc 2001 has a good, deep colour, a very dark core, graduated out to a deep pink rim. Lots of raspberry on toast on the nose, a touch burnt, perhaps notes of the barrel. Very firmly structured, a big wall of tannin that belies the vintage, but with massive fruit too. Quite a cool style overall, nicely done, fresh with good acidity, but I don't think it quite has the texture to match the tannin
